Introduction
In the world of fitness and athletic preparation, weight training has always been considered the reference method to develop strength and muscle mass. In recent years, however, an alternative technique has gained attention: Flywheel training (flywheel training). A study conducted by Swedish researchers directly compared this mode with traditional weight training, highlighting important differences in muscle activation, especially in the eccentric phase of movement, that is, the one where the muscle lengthens under stress.
The Study
Seventeen healthy men, with no particular experience in strength exercises for the lower limbs, followed five weeks of training for quadriceps. One group used a flying machine, while the other one performed the same exercise with a classic weight machine. Both programs included twelve sessions of knee extensions, with progressive loads and careful control of technique
Results
At the end of the training period, both groups increased the maximum strength. However, those who had trained with the flywheel showed a increased muscle activation during the eccentric phase, compared to those who had trained with weights. This is particularly relevant because eccentric contractions are considered a key stimulus to promote muscle hypertrophy, i.e. increased mass
Interpretation
In traditional weights, the eccentric phase tends to be less demanding: lowering a load requires less neuromuscular effort than lifting it. With the flywheel, instead, the inertia of the disk forces the muscle to work intensely even while opposing the return of movement. This leads to a eccentric overload able to stimulate more muscles and, over time, to induce faster and more consistent adaptations
Conclusions
The study suggests that flying training is not only a valid alternative to traditional weights, but may be superior in some contexts, especially when the goal is to increase muscle mass and tissue resistance. While not completely replacing classical methods, this technology is a valuable resource for athletes, trainers and physiotherapists looking for more effective tools to stimulate muscle growth and function
